Choosing an air cooler: tank size, air throw and room size
Match litres and air throw to your room so you stay cool without wasting power.
An air cooler is the most cost-effective way to survive a North Indian summer — if it's sized for the room. Too small and it just blows warm air; too big and you're refilling water you didn't need.
Three numbers to check
- Tank capacity (litres) — how long it runs between refills. 100 L comfortably lasts a night in most rooms.
- Air throw (feet) — how far the cool air reaches. Measure your room's longest side and pick a throw at least that long.
- Power (watts) — coolers use a fraction of an AC's power; 200–360W is typical.
Matching the room
| Room | Area | What to pick |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | up to ~150 sq ft | 100 L, 50–60 ft throw — like the Windpro |
| Living room | 150–300 sq ft | 100 L, high-speed fan — like the Sultan-100 |
| Hall, shop, office | 300+ sq ft | 150 L, 100 ft throw — like the Sultan-150 |
Get more cooling from any cooler
- Cross-ventilate. Open a window on the opposite side so humid air can escape.
- Use cold water (or ice) in peak afternoon heat for a few degrees extra.
- Clean the honeycomb pads every few weeks — clogged pads cool far less.
Desert coolers work best in dry heat. In very humid coastal weather, run them with plenty of ventilation.
